HOUSTON -- Alex Bregman, the Astros' first-round Draft pick in 2015 and top-ranked prospect, has been lights out in the Minor Leagues, so it's fair to wonder when the 22-year-old will make his Major League debut.
Astros general manager Jeff Luhnow said it depends.
"Depends on how we're playing, what opportunities there are," Luhnow said.
In Bregman's first two Triple-A games with the Fresno Grizzlies, he's excelled, going 5-for-8 with five RBIs, six runs and five hits, including two doubles and a two-run home run.
Before coming to Fresno, where Luhnow said the LSU product will mainly play shortstop, Bregman batted .297 with 70 hits, 14 home runs and 46 RBIs in 62 games with the Corpus Christi Hooks.
Although Bregman isn't on the 40-man roster, Luhnow said that could change if needed.
"Players that are not on the roster like Bregman have a shot to be here," Luhnow said.
Bregman, along with pitching prospect Joe Musgrove, will represent the U.S. Team at the 2016 SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game on July 10 at Petco Park in San Diego
The problem for Bregman is the opportunity, whether production-based or health-based, just hasn't been there. The Astros have a winning record, are 12-2 in their last 14 games and haven't had to deal with any major injuries lately.
"We've been really healthy this year," Luhnow said. "We've been playing really well for the past two months. … As long as we keep [winning], if we feel like someone can be additive to that formula, then we'll do it, but otherwise, they'll have to earn their way up here by outplaying the guys up here."
Until then, Astros manager A.J. Hinch said he'll focus more on the players in Houston than the ones not.
"I'm not into the Bregman watch right now," Hinch said.
