OAKLAND -- The A's rallied for their first walk-off win of the season, getting a two-run single off the bat of Adam Rosales for a thrilling 6-5 victory at the Coliseum on Saturday night that evened the three-game series.
The ninth-inning rally against Tigers closerFrancisco Rodriguez began with two outs, when Bruce Maxwell drew a walk, setting the stage for a Matt Joyce double that put runners on second and third for Rosales. The veteran infielder, who before the at-bat was told by teammates Stephen Vogt and Khris Davis to expect a fastball from Rodriguez, sent the first one he saw to left field for his third career walk-off hit.
"I was actually watching Joyce's at-bat and I saw him swing through an offspeed pitch, and I'm like, if I swing through an offspeed, so what?" Rosales said. "So I kept that approach. I know he's going to give me a fastball, but I didn't know it was going to be the first pitch and a pitch that I could handle."
The A's, who had dropped nine of their previous 11 games, also got two home runs from Yonder Alonso in the victory, with Ryon Healy adding another against right-hander Jordan Zimmermann. Detroit's starter allowed four runs in 5 2/3 innings.

"I felt good," ZImmermann said. "Really, two mistakes. It's tough. You pitch so well and you throw 80 pitches, then two mistakes out of 80 and it looks like you had a really bad night. It's tough, but we've got to come back tomorrow, grind out this third game and win the series."

Andrew Romine and Nicholas Castellanos each drove in two runs for the Tigers, who worked A's starter Jesse Hahn for 101 pitches in just 3 2/3 innings. Hahn allowed four runs (three earned) on six hits and four walks, loading the bases in the fourth, before handing over the ball to left-hander Daniel Coulombe, who issued a run-scoring walk to Alex Avila. Coulombe was also responsible for Detroit's fifth run, offering up an RBI double to Castellanos in the fifth.

A's rookie Frankie Montas pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his first career victory.
"That was fun," Alonso said. "It was definitely needed. We're just a bunch of guys that just don't quit. We grind, and I think we've been doing that the past couple days now. It's just nice to see. It's definitely a good team win."
MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Homer happy: After picking up two hits in Friday's series opener, Alonso hit a solo shot in the fourth and a two-run blast in the sixth for his first career multi-homer game, putting the A's within one run. The infielder has eight home runs, after totaling seven all of last season, and a team-leading 22 RBIs.
"We've seen it consistently the whole year," A's manager Bob Melvin said. "He's just staying with a routine, he's confident in his routine, a hard-working guy. He's synced his lower half with his upper half now, and you're seeing the fruits of really hard work and, certainly, talent. He's a strong kid, and the power's really coming out." More >

Ryon rebounds: After Healy committed two errors in Detroit's three-run second inning that ran Hahn's pitch count up to 59, the A's third baseman wasted no time atoning for his miscues, returning for the bottom half of the frame with a leadoff home run, his fifth of the season. The homer was the A's first hit off Zimmermann. 
"That shows you some toughness, because it's easy to just fold up tent after you make a couple errors and back off just a little bit, but he doesn't," Melvin said. "He's a fierce competitor, and he's not going to let something like that bother him. I played with Bob Brenly, who had four errors in one inning and ended up hitting a walk-off homer, and there's similarities to the intensity and the confidence those guys have."

WHAT'S NEXT
Tigers: Detroit looks to leave Oakland with a victory in the series finale before heading to Arizona for a three-game set, which begins Tuesday. Southpaw Daniel Norris (2-2, 4.00 ERA) will take the mound for the Tigers and face the A's for the first time in his career.
Athletics: Right-hander Sonny Gray will be on the mound Sunday for his first home start of the 2017 season, as the A's close out a three-game series with the Tigers at the Coliseum. First pitch is scheduled for 1:05 p.m. PT.
