OAKLAND -- The A's added another player to the disabled list Friday, and a significant one at that: Josh Reddick will became the 12th member of the team to hit the DL after fracturing his left thumb in Thursday night's 4-1 loss to the Yankees.
The A's will have a better idea of Reddick's expected return date after he sees a hand specialist Friday, but the right fielder said he was initially told he'll be out four to six weeks. The A's have recalled outfielder Jake Smolinksi from Triple-A Nashville.
"Frustrating, beyond," said Reddick, who sustained the injury while stealing second base.

"He hits third for us every day. He's one of the better players in the league," A's manager Bob Melvin said. "That's a pretty significant guy to lose."
The outfielder exited with a .322 average after finishing 2-for-3 with a home run, his fifth of the season. He was 22-for-47 (.468) over his past 14 games, riding a hot bat in his final season ahead of free agency.
"I feel like I was having a great year and cemented myself as the three-hole hitter of this team," Reddick said. "It's more frustrating when I do it on something that I don't do a whole lot, on stealing a bag as opposed to diving or doing something outrageous. Something so simple can be so damaging. You can understand the frustrations involved in this."

Upon reaching base on a single in the seventh, Reddick successfully stole second, but in doing so his left thumb clipped second baseman Starlin Castro's cleat. Reddick remained in the game following a visit from a team trainer but exited in favor of Tyler Ladendorf at the start of the eighth.
"It actually felt initially better after they came out to look at it, but then I tried to put my glove on and squeeze it and it didn't happen," Reddick said. "I came out and went right into X-rays, and sure enough, a slight fracture."
The A's, who have already lost outfielders Mark Canha (scheduled for hip surgery) and Sam Fuld (shoulder surgery) for the season, are likely to rotate several players in and out of right field during Reddick's absence. Along with Ladendorf, Chris Coghlan can also play the position.
Down on the farm, Jake Smolinski and Andrew Lambo are potential options to take Reddick's roster spot, since they're already on the 40-man.
"Red is a big part of our lineup and a great outfielder," starter Kendall Graveman said. "He brings a lot of energy every day. It's just one of those misfortunes that he slides in there and the ball is thrown a little offline. It's just a collision right there with his thumb. Quick recovery on him, we need him back in this lineup."
