SEATTLE -- The A's Josh Reddick was confined to designated hitter duties for Friday's series opener in Seattle because of back tightness, and all he did was homer from the spot, his first of the season.
Chris Coghlan, who collected two hits in his first start of the season Thursday, drew the start in right field in Reddick's stead and notched two more hits, including his own home run to unlock a 2-2 tie in the ninth inning and give the A's a 3-2 victory.
"You can't beat it," Coghlan said. "As a kid, that's what you dream of, that's what you always want, the opportunity to do that. Those moments, as a competitor, you know how big the situation is and you just want to come through for your teammates, and when you do, it's a feeling I can't describe. There's nothing in the world that beats it."
Reddick, whose homer came in the fifth inning, first experienced back discomfort ahead of Thursday's game in Oakland and again on the club's flight to Seattle, but he was feeling better by the end of Friday, manager Bob Melvin said.
It marked Reddick's 13th career start in the DH spot and the 26th in right field for Coghlan, who is quickly impressing his newest employers.
"He's a tenacious guy," Melvin said. "We're finding out a little something about him. He likes to play, and obviously the biggest guy in the room tonight."

Coghlan, whose efforts helped the A's improve to 2-2 in one-run games this season, after they dropped 35 of them in 2015, thrives in this role.
"I love it," he said. "Last year, when I was with the Cubs, we won a ton of one-run games, and you have to learn how to do it. ... My experience has been you've got to learn how to win those tight games."
Worth noting
• Infielder Eric Sogard (neck strain) took batting practice in Stockton, Calif., on Friday and is set to return there Sunday to face rehabbing pitcher Henderson Alvarez, who is scheduled for a two-inning simulated session.
Sogard is expected to begin a Minor League rehab assignment sometime shortly thereafter.
