Braves lose challenge on steal of third base
Safe call stands on Sizemore's swipe with one out in fourth inning
ATLANTA -- Grady Sizemore's fourth stolen base of the season was nearly not so. The Braves challenged Sizemore's swiped bag in the fourth inning, and after a brief replay review, the ruling was third-base umpire John Tumpane's safe call would stand.
Braves catcher Gerald Laird, who has thrown out four of nine stolen-base attempts in 2014, appeared to beat Sizemore to the bag with the throw, but the Sizemore made up the distance as third baseman Chris Johnson turned to apply the tag.
Sizemore, who has yet to be caught stealing this season, scored four pitches later on an RBI single by Boston catcher David Ross to tie the game, 2-2.
Johnson tagged Sizemore's left knee, which was tucked underneath his extended right leg that made contact with the base shortly before Johnson's glove. The Braves are now 8-3 in replay challenges.
