'Great Balbino' gets invite to Royals camp

February 19th, 2016

SURPRISE, Ariz. -- The Royals on Friday extended a Spring Training invite to first baseman Balbino Fuenmayor, dubbed "The Great Balbino."
Fuenmayor, the Royals' Double-A Player of the Year in 2015, suffered a season-ending ACL injury in late July while with Triple-A Omaha. But Fuenmayor said he completed his 29-week rehab earlier this week and got the news of his invite Friday morning.

"It feels great," Fuenmayor said. "I'm so happy. I'm 100 percent. I want to have a great camp."
Fuenmayor was originally with the Blue Jays' organization but never rose about Class A before fading out of baseball. The 26-year-old's comeback came in 2014 in the Can-Am Independent league, and the Royals signed him that fall.
Last season at Double-A Northwest Arkansas, Fuenmayor hit .354 with 15 homers and 51 RBIs. In 16 games at Omaha, he hit .377 with two homers and 15 RBIs before the injury.
