Davis one of three finalists for AL MVP
First baseman led Major Leagues with 53 home runs and 138 RBIs
BALTIMORE -- Orioles first baseman Chris Davis is one of three finalists for the American League MVP Award as unveiled on Tuesday night on MLB Network.
Davis was nominated along with the Tigers' Miguel Cabrera and the Angels' Mike Trout, and he was the O's lone finalist in the yearly Baseball Writers' Association of America (BBWAA) balloting.
Davis led the Majors with 53 homers and 138 RBIs and lost to Cabrera in two Players Choice Awards categories. Last year's Triple Crown winner, Cabrera won both the AL Outstanding Player and the overall Player of the Year Awards after leading baseball in batting average (.348), on-base percentage (.442) and slugging percentage (.636) in 2013, and he is considered the favorite for the BBWAA's award. Trout, 22, hit 27 home runs with 97 RBIs and will likely finish third in voting, with Davis and Cabrera largely seen as the two-man MVP race all season.
The MVP Award winners will be announced on Thursday, Nov. 14. The National League finalists are Paul Goldschmidt (D-backs), Andrew McCutchen (Pirates) and Yadier Molina (Cardinals).
Davis could get a major award this week when the Silver Sluggers -- given to the best offensive player at each position in each league -- are announced Wednesday.
