Play Beat the Streak now -- and target these hot hitters

August 10th, 2022

Beat the Streak is back for the 2022 season -- and the $5.6 million prize is still up for grabs.

The idea is simple -- pick one player (or two) every day who you think will get a hit. The objective -- surpass Joe DiMaggio's record-long 56-game hitting streak -- is a bit more challenging.

But we are here to help with that. We'll provide BTS leaderboard updates and daily insights on favorable matchups in this space, as well as every weekday on the new “Beat the Streak Daily: Inside the Hits” podcast.

Let's take a closer at the action from yesterday and today:

HITTERS TO TARGET TODAY

J.T. Realmuto, Phillies (vs. Marlins)
Usually, it would be unwise to pick a player facing NL Cy Young frontrunner Sandy Alcantara, but Realmuto is one of the lone players who have had his number. His .348 batting average against Alcantara is the second-highest among players with at least 15 at-bats against the righty, trailing only teammate Bryce Harper. With Harper on the IL, Realmuto is your next best bet.

Austin Riley, Braves (at Red Sox)
There aren't very many batters hotter than Riley right now, and with a favorable pitching matchup, he should be a popular pick. In nine at-bats against Nick Pivetta, Riley has hit two home runs. Pivetta has also been getting hit around a bit lately, as batters are hitting .365 off him over his past six starts.

Trea Turner, Dodgers (vs. Twins)
The All-Star break clearly had no effect on the 2021 batting champ's hot streak, as Turner has only gone hitless one time since July 9. Going into Wednesday, he's hitting .324 with a .916 OPS in that span. Combine that with a .438 lifetime average against Twins starter Sonny Gray and that's a recipe for success.

OFFENSE(S) TO AVOID

White Sox (at Royals -- Kris Bubic)
With Tim Anderson on the shelf for a good chunk for the rest of the year, the White Sox have only four players penciled into the everyday starting lineup who are hitting .250 or higher at the moment. Three of them -- Luis Robert (0-for-7), Eloy Jiménez (0-for-14) and José Abreu (2-for-16) -- have not had much success against Bubic.

Mariners (vs. Yankees -- Nestor Cortes)
Another team affected by a significant injury, the Mariners have not looked the same without Julio Rodríguez. Over its past 12 games coming into Tuesday, Seattle hit .203 as a unit. That is the lowest mark for any team in MLB, barely edging out the Tigers and Cubs, who hit .205 and .206 respectively over their past dozen games.
