Play Beat the Streak now -- and lock in these picks

May 19th, 2022

Beat the Streak is back for the 2022 season -- and the $5.6 million prize is still up for grabs.

The idea is simple -- pick one player (or two) every day who you think will get a hit. The objective -- surpass Joe DiMaggio's record-long 56-game hitting streak -- is a bit more challenging.

But we are here to help with that. We'll provide BTS leaderboard updates and daily insights on favorable matchups in this space, as well as every weekday on the new “Beat the Streak Daily: Inside the Hits” podcast.

Let's take a closer at the action from yesterday and today:

HITTERS TO TARGET TODAY

Tim Anderson, White Sox (vs. Royals)
It's never a bad idea to go with the player who has the highest batting average in the Majors over the last four seasons -- but we particularly like Anderson in this spot. He gets a matchup against Royals starter Carlos Hernández, who has a 9.11 ERA in six starts this season. The right-hander is allowing opposing batters to hit a blistering .351 while permitting 39 hits in 26 2/3 innings. Hernández also has just 13 K's, placing his strikeout rate in the first percentile. In other words, Anderson should put a few balls in play, and that typically bodes well for him.

Aaron Judge, Yankees (vs. Orioles)
Judge is as locked in as it gets right now, hitting .324 with 10 home runs in his last 17 games. He's been particularly dominant against the Orioles, hitting .333 with 13 home runs in his last 22 games against Baltimore. That includes going 4-for-9 with a pair of homers against Bruce Zimmermann, who will be taking the mound in this one. When Judge is on one of these hot streaks, there are few hitters -- if any -- as dangerous as the Yankees slugger.

Andrew Benintendi, Royals (vs. White Sox)
The Royals have certainly struggled with the bats this season, but this could be a spot to take a long look at their lineup against White Sox starter Vince Velasquez. Though Velasquez had a couple solid starts recently against the Angels and Red Sox, he was tagged for seven runs on eight hits (including three homers) against the Yankees in his last time out. Velasquez has always been a boom-or-bust pitcher, but -- even with those recent strong outings -- he ranks in the bottom-11 percentile among all pitchers in average exit velocity, barrel percentage, hard-hit percentage, xBA, xSLG and xwOBA. Benintendi has been the Royals' most consistent hitter this season, so he gets the call here.

OFFENSE(S) TO AVOID

Cubs (vs. D-backs -- Zac Gallen)
Gallen has been lights-out this season, posting a ridiculous 1.05 ERA through six starts. He's holding opposing hitters to a .150 average, while allowing no more than two hits in four of his six starts. That includes his most recentouting on Saturday against these same Cubs when he struck out a season-high nine batters while allowing just two hits over six innings.
