Beltran joins outfield leaders in latest National League balloting figures

Wright, Sandoval continue battle at third; Posey remains NL overall leader

Seven-time All-Star and five-time fan-elected starter Carlos Beltran of the St. Louis Cardinals has joined the outfield leaders in the second balloting figures for the 84th All-Star Game, to be played on Tuesday, July 16th at Citi Field in New York. The latest N.L. results were announced earlier this evening on ESPN's "Baseball Tonight" prior to its Sunday Night Baseball telecast.

Beltran, who was a starter in last year's Midsummer Classic after finishing second in fan voting among N.L. outfielders, has received 1,550,844 votes. It would mark the third consecutive season for a Cardinals outfielder to earn a fan election following Beltran's start last season and Lance Berkman's nod in 2011. The Cardinals have had at least one player earn a fan-election in each of the last four seasons, the longest active streak in the N.L. Beltran, who ranks sixth all-time among switch-hitters with 347 home runs, is joined in the outfield by Justin Upton of the Atlanta Braves and Bryce Harper of the Washington Nationals. Upton, a two-time All-Star, remains the top outfielder in the N.L. with 1,666,026 votes as he aims for his first fan-elected start in his first season with the Braves. The younger Upton, who ranks fifth in the N.L. with 14 home runs, is followed closely by Harper, who has accumulated 1,616,784 votes. In 2012, Harper was the youngest All-Star position player in history and the third-youngest Major League All-Star ever. The 2012 N.L. Rookie of the Year would become just the second fan-elected starter in Nationals history, joining Alfonso Soriano (2006). Five-time All-Star and four-time fan-elected starter Ryan Braun (1,283,103) of the Milwaukee Brewers ranks fourth among N.L. outfielders followed by Shin-Soo Choo (1,043,839) of the Cincinnati Reds and two-time All-Star Hunter Pence (984,734) of the San Francisco Giants.

Buster Posey, who set a new N.L. All-Star balloting record with 7,621,370 votes in 2012, continues to lead all N.L. players with 1,961,861 votes. The 2012 N.L. MVP is bidding for his second consecutive fan-elected start after becoming the first Giants catcher to earn a fan-elected starting nod in 2012. In addition, the 2010 N.L. Rookie of the Year would become the first Giants player to receive consecutive fan-elected starts since Barry Bonds in 2003-04. Posey, who has hit safely in 34 of his last 43 games, is followed behind the plate by four-time All-Star and two-time fan-elected starter Yadier Molina of the St. Louis Cardinals, who has totaled 1,684,700 votes, which ranks third overall in the Senior Circuit.

Posey's Giants teammate Pablo Sandoval, who has garnered 1,674,157 votes, continues to lead a tight race at third base over six-time All-Star and four-time fan-elected starter David Wright (1,473,381) of the hometown New York Mets. The 2012 World Series MVP, who leads N.L. third basemen with 37 RBI, is attempting to become the first Giants infielder to earn consecutive fan-elected starts since second baseman Jeff Kent (2000-01), and the first Giants third baseman since Matt Williams (1994-96). Together, Sandoval (2012) and Wright (2006-07, 2009-10) have earned five of the last seven fan-elected starts at third base for the N.L.

Two-time All-Star Troy Tulowitzki of the Colorado Rockies, who moved into second place overall in the N.L. with 1,691,262 votes, joins Sandoval on the left side of the infield as he maintains his lead over Sandoval's Giants teammate Brandon Crawford (1,015,633), who is bidding for his Midsummer Classic debut. Tulowitzki, who is contending for his first fan-elected start, would join Dante Bichette (1996), Larry Walker (1997-99) and Todd Helton (2001-03) as the only players in Rockies history to earn a fan-elected starting assignment. In addition, he would become the fourth consecutive different N.L. shortstop to earn a starting bid, joining Hanley Ramirez (2010), Jose Reyes (2011) and Rafael Furcal (2012). Tulowitzki currently leads all Major League shortstops with a .346 batting average, 15 home runs, 49 RBI, 38 runs scored, a .411 on-base percentage and a .635 slugging percentage.

Cincinnati Reds teammates Joey Votto and Brandon Phillips round out the N.L. infield as they strive to become the fifth pair of N.L. teammates (sixth time) to receive fan-elected starts at first and second base. The others include Steve Garvey and Davey Lopes of the Los Angeles Dodgers (1979 and 1980), Pete Rose and Manny Trillo of the Philadelphia Phillies (1982), Jeff Bagwell and Craig Biggio of the Houston Astros (1997) and Prince Fielder and Rickie Weeks of the Milwaukee Brewers (2011).

Votto, a three-time All-Star and the 2012 fan-elected starter, has tallied 1,569,477 votes. The 2010 N.L. MVP, who became the first Reds first baseman to earn a fan-elected start in 2012, would become the first Reds player to earn consecutive fan-elected starts since Hall of Famer Barry Larkin (1999-2000). Votto is followed by Paul Goldschmidt (928,647) of the Arizona Diamondbacks, who leads the N.L. with 58 RBI as he attempts to earn his Midsummer Classic debut.

Phillips, a two-time All-Star, has received 1,541,720 votes as he tries to hold off Marco Scutaro (1,285,076) of the Giants. Phillips, who leads all Major League second basemen with 45 RBI, is aiming to become the first Reds second baseman to earn a fan-elected start since Joe Morgan claimed seven consecutive fan elections from 1972-78. In addition, Phillips ranks first among N.L. second basemen with a .291 batting average, 37 runs scored and a .471 slugging percentage, and is tied for first with 65 hits.
