PHOENIX -- Tempers flared during the top of the fifth inning in Thursday night's Dodgers-D-backs game at Chase Field.
Los Angeles starter Rich Hill bunted to lead off the inning on an inside pitch from Arizona's Archie Bradley. When Hill got to first base, he turned and yelled at Bradley, seemingly upset with the inside pitch. Bradley yelled back, leading to the dugouts emptying and players running in from the bullpen.
"It was just being competitive, just wanted him to get the ball over the plate and really that was the end of it," Hill said. "There was no ill will or anything like that. Just got excited. I saw the pitch, it was supposed to be inside and he just missed. I guess being a pitcher, I just got excited."
That was the end of the encounter, however, with no physical contact occurring.
"Archie's just trying to throw a strike there," said D-backs manager Chip Hale, whose team went on to win the game, 7-3.
"When the ball is coming at you you get a little frustrated. He voiced it and Archie voiced it back. It was good baseball. It's the way it goes."
The Dodgers and D-backs have some past history. In 2013, a brawl erupted between the two teams after Zack Greinke (then with the Dodgers, now with the D-backs) was hit by a pitch. It was the second benches-clearing incident that night, leading to six ejections.
