Bergman to make debut in series opener vs. Braves

DENVER -- Right-handed pitcher Christian Bergman, a 24th-round Draft pick in 2010 who has developed into a front-line pitcher at Triple-A Colorado Springs, will be called upon to start for the Rockies in his Major League debut Monday night against the Braves at Coors Field.

Bergman, 26, who pitched four seasons at Cal Irvine, is 4-4 with a 3.84 ERA in 12 starts for Colorado Springs.

"He's performed very well, particularly in Colorado Springs, where he's been dominant," Rockies manager Walt Weiss said. "He's a very intelligent pitcher, very good command, and has the ability to execute a scouting report and a game plan. He has a very good feel for pitching."

Bergman takes the rotation spot of right-hander Jordan Lyles (5-1, 3.52 ERA), who suffered a fractured left hand during his last start.
