This player 'owns' your team the most

June 10th, 2019

In theory, it doesn’t make any sense that one particular player would dominate against one particular team. Teams change all the time, with different players and different management and different strategies; when one player does great against a particularly team, what you’re really saying is that player is great against a certain uniform. Who does great against uniforms?

But in practice, sometimes an opponent just owns your team. So, today, we look at the opponent for each team that seems to have his best games against them. These are the guys who have their number. We must be reasonable here, though. We require any hitter to have had at least 150 at-bats against the team, and any pitcher to have thrown at least 50 innings. We’re looking for long-term trends here … such as they are. We also tried not to pick any player twice. Otherwise, you could just pick Mike Trout every time.

AMERICAN LEAGUE EAST

Blue Jays -- David Price, LHP, BOS: Price was terrific for the Blue Jays during his brief stint with them in 2015, and the Jays shouldn’t have been surprised. In 31 games against them, Price is 22-3 with a 2.37 ERA.

Orioles -- Miguel Cabrera, DH, DET: Miggy has terrorized lots of teams, but his .662 slugging percentage vs. the O's is more than 100 points higher than his already-formidable career mark … to say nothing of his 1.105 OPS against them.

Rays -- Felix Hernandez, RHP, SEA: King Felix has made 18 career starts against the Rays, and he's 9-3 with a 2.19 ERA and two shutouts.

Red Sox -- David Robertson, RHP, PHI: The longtime Yankees (and now Phillies) reliever has been a valuable Red Sox killer throughout his career. In 68 2/3 innings over 70 appearances against the Red Sox, he has given up only one home run and has 83 strikeouts and a 1.83 ERA.

Yankees -- Chris Sale, LHP, BOS: Another reason the Red Sox brought in Sale: He owns the Yankees, with a lifetime 2.10 ERA and 146 strikeouts in 111 2/3 innings over 19 appearances against them. Sale also shut down the Bronx Bombers in last year's postseason.

AMERICAN LEAGUE CENTRAL

Indians -- Gio Gonzalez, LHP, MIL: Weird, right? The Indians must think Gonzalez is a future Hall of Famer: In 55 2/3 innings against them, Gonzalez is 6-0 with a 1.62 ERA.

Royals -- Francisco Lindor, SS, CLE: Lindor is great against everyone, but he has terrorized the Royals, putting up a career .317/.381/.629 line against them. His 20 home runs against them are seven more than he has against any other team.

Tigers -- Jose Abreu, 1B, CWS: Abreu’s lifetime OPS is .864. Against the Tigers? .985.

Twins -- Nelson Cruz, DH, MIN: Maybe the reason the Twins are having such a breakthrough season is that they signed the guy who has hit 20 homers against them in only 70 games.

White Sox -- Max Scherzer, RHP, WSH: The White Sox were surely happy to get Scherzer out of the American League Central -- he's 13-6 with a 2.43 ERA and 171 strikeouts against them in 24 career starts.

AMERICAN LEAGUE WEST

Angels -- Curtis Granderson, OF, MIA: The Angels are one of the few teams the Grandy Man has never played for, but they probably wish he did: He's hit a home run every 15 at-bats against them (24 homers in 305 at-bats).

Astros -- Adam Wainwright, RHP, STL: Harkening all the way back to the Astros’ days in the NL, Wainwright has vexed them, putting up a 13-1 record against them with a staggering 1.48 ERA in 122 innings.

Athletics -- Ervin Santana, RHP, NYM: If Big Erv put up the numbers in one particular season that he has his whole career against the A’s -- 208 innings pitched, a 17-7 record and a 1.95 ERA -- he’d win the Cy Young going away. (And yes, he really is on the Mets now, having recently signed a Minor League deal.)

Mariners -- CC Sabathia, LHP, NYY: It speaks to CC’s incredible longevity that he has thrown almost a full season’s worth of innings against Seattle (195 2/3) -- with an impressive 2.67 ERA -- despite never playing in the AL West.

Rangers -- Mike Trout, CF, LAA: Count the Rangers among those not enthused Trout will remain in Los Angeles for the next decade: He has a higher OPS (1.080) against them than any other American League team, plus 31 homers and 27 steals against them in 142 games.

NATIONAL LEAGUE EAST

Braves -- Jacob deGrom, RHP, NYM: Despite a 1.86 lifetime ERA against the Braves in 18 starts, deGrom is only 6-6 against them, which is very Jacob deGrom.

Marlins -- Gregor Blanco, OF, NYM: Why is Blanco hitting .384 lifetime (with a .466 OBP!) against the Marlins? Life is full of mysteries. (And yes, Blanco is on the Mets, too, but currently in Triple-A.)

Mets -- Julio Teheran, RHP, ATL: The Braves starter has had his ups and downs in his career, but he’s always breezed past the Mets, with a lifetime 2.35 ERA in 160 2/3 innings.

Nationals -- Anibal Sanchez, RHP, WSH: We’re through the looking glass here, as Sanchez is currently on the Nationals. He has had a somewhat middling career, but he’s Bob Gibson against the Nats, going 10-1 lifetime with a 2.08 ERA in 25 starts. If you can’t beat ‘em, sign ‘em.

Phillies -- Ryan Braun, OF, MIL: If the Phillies end up meeting the Brewers in the playoffs, they might do well to remember that Braun has a lifetime .385/.429/.706 slash line against them and 25 home runs in 79 games.

NATIONAL LEAGUE CENTRAL

Brewers -- Paul Goldschmidt, 1B, STL: Goldschmidt hit three homers in his first series as a Cardinal against the Brewers, but he has always knocked them around: He has 16 homers in just 56 games against them with an 1.193 OPS.

Cardinals -- Bryce Harper, OF, PHI: Harper has said he loves Busch Stadium, and why not? He has a career 1.048 OPS against St. Louis.

Cubs -- Joey Votto, 1B, CIN: Votto has been almost exactly as good against the Cubs as he has against everyone else, which is to say, he has been incredible against them. He has a career .315/.422/.560 slash line against the Cubs, including .423/.448/.577 this year.

Pirates -- Albert Pujols, 1B, LAA: Pujols has absolutely devastated the Pirates since his days with the Cardinals, putting up a 1.121 OPS and hitting .360 with 50 homers in 177 games.

Reds -- Cole Hamels, LHP, CHC: The Reds do not love having Hamels in their division. In 17 starts against them, he’s 11-1 with a 1.91 ERA.

NATIONAL LEAGUE WEST

Diamondbacks -- Freddie Freeman, 1B, ATL: Freeman has a .350/.413/.650 line against the D-backs. (Did you realize he’s making a Hall of Fame case, and not just against Arizona?)

Dodgers -- Madison Bumgarner, LHP, SF: Never let it be said Bumgarner doesn’t get up for the big games against the Giants’ hated rivals. His 2.52 ERA against the Dodgers in 35 games is more than half a run below his career ERA.

Giants -- Clayton Kershaw, LHP, LAD: Of course, Kershaw has stepped up his game even more against the Giants. It’s tough to beat a team when its ace is putting up a 1.72 ERA in 46 games against you.

Padres -- Zack Greinke, RHP, ARI: Greinke is 13-3 lifetime with a 2.37 ERA against the Padres … though Fernando Tatis Jr. is a whole new challenge for the crafty veteran.

Rockies -- Giancarlo Stanton, OF, NYY: Everybody loves hitting at Coors Field, but few have loved it more than Stanton. His .342/.428/.746 line and 20 home runs in 51 games against the Rockies are downright Ruthian. And he crushed a 504-foot home run at Coors on Aug. 6, 2016.
