BOSTON -- After many high hopes of a possible return, Red Sox outfielder Blake Swihart is scheduled to undergo season-ending surgery on his left ankle.
"He's going have surgery with Dr. [Robert] Anderson in North Carolina. That's going to be set up in the coming days, but that's been determined tonight," Red Sox manager John Farrell said after his club's 5-3 win over the Yankees on Tuesday.
The Red Sox held a number of medical meetings on Tuesday, one of which regarded Swihart's status. Boston received the second opinion from Dr. Anderson after getting an update from Dr. George Theodore.
Swihart, 24, has missed 54 games after colliding with the left-field wall in attempts to catch a fly ball on June 4 at Fenway Park. After initially being placed on the 15-day disabled list and walking around in a boot, Swihart's ankle didn't improve. He was transferred to the 60-day DL on July 9.
Swihart began the season as a catcher before being optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket. Once he returned to the Majors, 13 of Swihart's 19 games were played in left field, where he was finally beginning to hit his stride.
The outfielder was hitting .258/.365/.355 with three triples and five RBIs before the injury.
