Blue Jays break out for seven-run inning

TORONTO -- The Blue Jays erupted for a seven-run second inning in Wednesday night's 10-3 win over the A's. A Ryan Goins one-out walk kicked off what was the team's 11th six-plus run inning of the season, making it an 10-2 game before the frame was said and done.

"That ball was flying tonight, you guys saw that," Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said. "…A big night from the offence. I don't think we've had one of those in a while."

Eleven Blue Jays batters came to plate to record two doubles, four singles and a big three-run shot, courtesy of Justin Smoak.

Chris Colabello's two-out, RBI single drove A's starter Aaron Brooks from the game after he allowed eight earned runs on six hits over 1 2/3 innings before he was replaced in favour of reliever Felix Doubront, who didn't fare much better. The former Blue Jays lefty allowed a single, a homer and double before registering the final out to end the second.

The offensive outburst gave the Blue Jays their 17th 10-plus run game of the season, the most they've registered since 2003, when they put up 19. It's the first time this year they've had 10 runs after two innings.

That run support was more than enough for knuckleballer R.A. Dickey, who didn't have his best stuff, but was still able to post his seventh straight quality start.

"Sometimes it can be hard to pitch with an eight-run lead because you don't wanna make mistakes, don't wanna walk guys," said Dickey, who's 4-0 with a 1.49 ERA in six starts since the All-Star Break.
