Blue Jays place Leone on bereavement list

Dermody called up in corresponding roster move

August 13th, 2017

TORONTO -- The Blue Jays made another bullpen move prior to Sunday's series finale against the Pirates, placing on the bereavement list and recalling left-hander from Triple-A Buffalo.
Leone pitched 1 2/3 innings of relief on Saturday and struck out three while allowing just one hit. Since being claimed off waivers from the D-backs last November, the 25-year-old has quietly emerged as one of the Blue Jays' most important relief arms and has lowered his ERA to 2.55 on the season.
Dermody has made five MLB appearances this season for the Blue Jays. He was hit hard in his lone April outing, allowing five runs that included three home runs while recording just one out. Dermody looked to be more settled in over his four appearances over late July and early August, however, and is capable of pitching multiple innings if needed.
Toronto now has three left-handers in its bullpen with Dermody joining J.P. Howell and . Howell has pitched just 10 innings over 15 MLB appearances this season, and has only taken the mound twice since being activated from the disabled list on Aug. 4.
Montero works out
In other injury news, catcher went through an extensive workout on the field prior to Sunday's game. Montero threw at normal strength to second and third base, then blocked balls in the dirt wearing his full gear. The 34-year-old was placed on the DL on August 4 with right knee inflammation.
