TORONTO -- Toronto's injuries continue to pile up, as left fielder Ezequiel Carrera was placed on the 10-day disabled list Wednesday due to a fractured right foot.
Carrera fouled a ball off the foot Tuesday night but did not immediately leave the game. The fracture was discovered after Carrera began experiencing more pain after the game. In his place, outfielder John Smith has been called up from Triple-A Buffalo. Smith went 3-for-4 in Wednesday night's 7-6 win over the Rays.
"It's going to hurt," Carrera said through a team translator prior to Wednesday's game against the Rays. "It's hard to see my teammates out there knowing that I cannot contribute. I'm going to keep my mind positive. I hope that everybody gets healthy. Not just me, but the rest of the team."
Toronto already has Steve Pearce, Dalton Pompey and Anthony Alford on the disabled list, all of whom could factor into the left-field picture when healthy. Pearce is expected to finish up his rehab assignment in Triple-A and return to the team by this weekend, but Smith got the Wednesday start in left. It will be his third stint with the MLB club after making his debut and recording his first hit earlier this season.

"I'd seen him in Spring Training a couple times, there was just something I liked about him," said manager John Gibbons. "He's playing well, and even the couple times he's been up this year, not a whole lot of at-bats, but he looks good in the box."
Smith Jr.'s father played eight Major League seasons for the Cubs, Braves, Angels and Orioles. In 1989, the elder Smith hit .324 with an .875 OPS and finished second in National League Rookie of the Year voting.
Now 24, Smith has enjoyed one of his strongest Minor League seasons in his first taste of Triple-A ball as one of the Bisons' most productive players. Over 55 games at the level, he has posted a .303 batting average with an .807 OPS.
