Blue Jays option Rasmussen, leaving six in 'pen

BOSTON -- The Blue Jays optioned left-hander Rob Rasmussen to Triple-A Buffalo on Tuesday afternoon to make room for infielder Danny Valencia.

The move leaves Toronto with six relievers on the 25-man roster. That's a less-than-ideal situation, but another move is expected to be made within the next couple of days.

All it will take for the Blue Jays to reverse course is to have a short outing or two from one of their starters. For now, though, the club increases its overall versatility by having five players available off the bench.

"Day to day, if it blows up on us, we're good now ... of course, we'd have to make a move then," manager John Gibbons said when asked about the status of his bullpen and whether the club will need to add another reliever soon.

Rasmussen appeared in 10 games for the Blue Jays. He allowed four runs on eight hits and seven walks while striking out 13. Rasmussen was the third lefty available out of the bullpen as Brett Cecil and Aaron Loup still remain.
