Hutchison rebounds to put rough start behind him

TORONTO -- Coming off what was by far his worst outing of the season, Drew Hutchison entered Wednesday's start against the Mets hungry to give the Blue Jays a bounce-back performance. The right-hander delivered one in the form of 5 2/3 scoreless innings, guiding the Blue Jays to an 8-0 win over the Mets at Rogers Centre.

"I wasn't as sharp as I'd like to have been, would've liked to go deeper into the game. But I made big pitches when I needed to and I thought tonight was a good step," Hutchison said. "Good to get back in the win column."

Never overly expressive or emotional, Hutchison wasn't outwardly exuberant about improving his record to 6-1 on the season, but when considering his 2 1/3-inning outing against Boston on Friday, he had to be pleased.

Hutchison was shelled by the Red Sox in his last start, giving up eight earned runs in what he called the worst game of his entire life. He was a lot better Wednesday, allowing four hits and one walk with five strikeouts as he notched another win at home while lowering his ERA at Rogers Centre to 2.38.

Hutchison worked out of a few jams, coming through with a big strikeout against Lucas Duda with two men on and two outs in the third. After allowing a one-out double in the fifth, he struck out Dilson Herrera before getting Curtis Granderson to pop out on a full count to end that threat. He turned the ball over to the bullpen in a 1-0 game, and four Blue Jays relievers combined for 3 1/3 innings as Toronto snapped a two-game losing streak.

"He gave us a good outing tonight in a tight ballgame," Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said.
