Goins heads to DL with forearm tightness

Utility infielder pitched an inning during Friday's 19-inning marathon

TORONTO -- Ryan Goins' rare appearance out of the bullpen has resulted in a stint on the 15-day disabled list.
A day after pitching an inning for the Blue Jays in their 19-inning, 2-1 loss to the Indians, Toronto placed the utility infielder on the DL with right forearm tightness.
It was Goins' first Major League pitching appearance and came after the Blue Jays had used all seven of their relievers. The 28-year-old loaded the bases with one out in the 18th inning, before inducing an inning-ending double play ball to end the frame.
"It just kind of tightened up and it's precautionary," Goins said prior to Saturday's contest against Cleveland. "It's just to see that something [is] not wrong. I'll get it checked out, take a couple of days and go from there."
Goins became the ninth position player to take the mound for the Blue Jays, and was followed to the mound by fellow infielder Darwin Barney, who allowed the go-ahead run in the 19th inning. Goins is not expected to miss any more than the requisite 15-day period.
"It is what it is. I don't regret it at all," Goins said. "I was going out there to get outs and help the team win in whatever way that I could. Things happen in this game and it's just one of those situations. But we'll take a couple of days, get back after it and I'll be back."
In addition to placing Goins on the DL, the Blue Jays also optioned right-hander Bo Schultz to Triple-A Buffalo and recalled right-hander Drew Hutchison, as well as left-hander Aaron Loup.
Schultz pitched 2 2/3 scoreless innings on Friday and threw 48 pitches. The Blue Jays opted to go with Goins and Barney instead of one of their starting pitchers. Blue Jays manager John Gibbons admitted the options were "limited." J.A. Happ threw a side session on Thursday, while Saturday's starter, Marco Estrada, has been battling tightness in his back.
"That's what [stinks] about the game," Gibbons said about demoting Schultz. "Guy does a great job for us, but he's got options, so he's got to go."
Hutchison has made one spot-start for the Blue Jays this season, throwing 5 2/3 innings of two-run ball on April 24 against the A's. The 25-year-old is expected to be an option for Gibbons in long relief. Loup has spent parts of the last five season with the Blue Jays. The 28-year-old southpaw has pitched in seven games this season and has allowed four runs over four innings.
"We are pretty beat up," Gibbons admitted. "We need some guys to cover a couple of days' worth, anyway."
