DETROIT -- The Blue Jays recalled switch-pitcher Pat Venditte from Triple-A Buffalo on Tuesday afternoon, and infielder Matt Dominguez was designated for assignment to make room on the 25-man roster.
The move was made to give the Blue Jays an additional arm out of the bullpen. Toronto used four relievers during an 11-0 loss to the Tigers on Monday night, so the club felt the need to add some additional protection.
"Just to cover us," Blue Jays manager John Gibbons explained.
Venditte has gone back and forth from the Minor Leagues several times this year. He has appeared in seven games for the Blue Jays and has allowed three earned runs over 6 2/3 innings.
Dominguez was added to the roster during a recent series in Boston when Josh Donaldson was dealing with a nagging right thumb injury. Donaldson missed one game vs. the Red Sox but has since returned and should not require additional time off.
The 26-year-old Dominguez appeared in five games for the Blue Jays but did not have a hit in 11 at-bats. He is a career .231 hitter with 42 home runs and a .644 OPS at the big league level.

The running game
Russell Martin is known as one of the best catchers in baseball controlling the running game, but that hasn't been the case so far this season. Martin has allowed 30 stolen bases this year and has thrown out just five baserunners. His .143 caught stealing percentage ranks last in the Major Leagues among qualified catchers.
Those are surprising numbers for one of the best arms in the game, but Gibbons believes most of that has to do with his pitching staff and not Martin. In Gibbons' view, the starting rotation isn't doing quite enough to cut down on the leads and jumps that opposing teams are getting from first base.

"A number of times, I don't think we've been giving him a real good shot," Gibbons said. "That's definitely played a big part of it. ... We've got some guys who go to the leg kick when they're trying to make a pitch or two. That's the main thing.
"What basestealers look for, they know when a guy has a slide step, but they'll still go into certain times with a high leg kick. They wait until they get a high leg kick. Slide step is not naturally for everybody, not everybody is good with it."
