TORONTO -- The Blue Jays optioned prospect Sean Reid-Foley to Triple-A Buffalo on Monday afternoon, and they reinstated catcher Luke Maile from the paternity list.
Reid-Foley, who is ranked Toronto's No. 10 prospect by MLB Pipeline, made two starts for the Blue Jays and allowed nine runs over 9 1/3 innings. In his last start, the 22-year-old surrendered eight runs (six earned) over 4 1/3 innings during a lopsided loss to New York.
The decision to option Reid-Foley indicates the Blue Jays are expecting right-hander Aaron Sanchez to return from the disabled list in the near future. Sanchez was scheduled to make a rehab start for Double-A New Hampshire on Monday night, and if all goes well, then he would be a candidate to start Saturday vs. the Phillies.

"A lot will depend on how Sanchez does tonight," Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said Monday afternoon. "If he's good, goes out there and feels fine, throws a pretty good number of pitches, then he should be good to go. But we won't know that until afterwards."
Reid-Foley's next turn through the rotation was originally scheduled for Friday against Philadelphia. Toronto has an off-day on Thursday, which allows the club to start lefty Ryan Borucki on normal rest for Friday's series opener vs. the Phillies and then create an opening for Sanchez the following day.
Gibbons said the Blue Jays will give Reid-Foley a little bit of a breather in the Minor Leagues by closely monitoring his innings. He is expected to return either later this month or when rosters expand on Sept. 1. The first stint created some adversity for the promising right-hander, but Gibbons believes he'll be better off in the long run because of it.
"I think it has been a good experience for him," Gibbons said. "He didn't necessarily have the results he wanted, but I did see some good things.
"I think it was a good experience pitching at Yankee Stadium. It's different, there's no doubt about that. He got hit around a time or two, but he also had some success against certain guys and basically figuring out what works."
Maile will return to his role as the Blue Jays' backup catcher, and he should continue to split time with rookie Danny Jansen. Veteran Russell Martin will also play behind the plate on occasion, but he should expect to continue seeing time at third base until Josh Donaldson returns from the DL.
Gibbons, Pillar on same page
Gibbons defended his decision not to bench Kevin Pillar after the manager gave Toronto's starting center fielder an earful following an ill-advised baserunning decision during Sunday's loss to the Yankees.
Pillar made the third out at third base on a stolen-base attempt when his team was trailing by four runs. Gibbons took exception and let Pillar hear it in the dugout during a one-sided verbal exchange, which lasted approximately 30 seconds.
Some critics believed that Gibbons didn't go far enough and should have removed Pillar from the game. That's not something Gibbons agrees with because he believes the point was made and Pillar is not the type of player whose effort level has to be questioned.
"Let's be realistic, it's hard to criticize Kevin Pillar for the way he goes about his business." Gibbons said prior to Monday night's 5-3 win over the Orioles. "You never worry about effort. He sacrifices everything he's got ... I've got zero complaints about Kevin Pillar other than I just didn't like what he did [Sunday]. There was no motive behind my reaction for other people."
Pillar looked like a man possessed throughout the game Monday. He doubled in the first inning, and added an RBI double in the bottom of the fifth as part of 2-for-4 performance at plate, which included a run scored. 
Gibbons couldn't help but have a little bit of fun after Pillar's double in the first inning. When a television camera zoomed in on Gibbons after the double, he broke into laughter, nodded at the camera and then gave a big thumbs up.

"I don't know what the big deal was anyways, to be honest with you," Gibbons said after the win. "You guys get a little rattled up here. He has been getting hits. He had a couple of doubles tonight. This isn't rocket science, you don't need the stats to tell us, I've been watching the games, if a guy is hot, put him at second, right? It's pretty simple and he responded."
Injury updates
• Infielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. is expected to return to the Blue Jays' lineup by the end of the week. Gibbons confirmed that Gurriel is a candidate to come off the 10-day DL for Friday's series opener against the Phillies. Gurriel was moved up a level on Monday to continue his rehab assignment with Triple-A Buffalo. The 24-year-old has been out since July 29 with a sprained left ankle and knee.
• Infielder Brandon Drury is out of his hard cast and is now wearing a removable splint. He is scheduled to be re-examined in approximately one week to determine the next steps in his rehab assignment. Drury has been out since Aug. 4 with a fractured left hand.
