Bochy explains decisions on Giants' All-Stars

SAN FRANCISCO -- Giants manager Bruce Bochy explained why three of the club's four All-Stars -- second baseman Marco Scutaro, left-hander Madison Bumgarner and right-hander Sergio Romo -- didn't appear in Tuesday's Midsummer Classic, which the American League won, 3-0.

Bochy said Thursday that Bumgarner was assigned the emergency long-relief role and that Romo, who warmed up briefly in the late innings, was being saved for extra innings. Scutaro, Bochy explained, would have pinch-hit in the ninth inning if left-handed-batting Domonic Brown of Philadelphia had made it to the plate and the AL had summoned a left-handed reliever.

Bochy, who managed the NL All-Stars, said that the pitching for both teams looked just as good, if not better, than it appeared on television.

"It was like if you didn't throw 95 [mph], you weren't allowed to pitch," Bochy said. "I can't think of another All-Star Game when there were that many great arms out there."
