Bombers bits

• Second baseman Brian Roberts was not in the lineup on Saturday. Girardi's original plan was to give Roberts Friday off, but he needed to use him off the bench when Teixeira was injured in the second inning.

"He played the whole day yesterday, and we've got to be smart with him," Girardi said. "My concern about this initial stretch is fatigue and guys pulling stuff."

Yangervis Solarte made his third consecutive start on Saturday, and Girardi said that he could continue to ride the rookie's hot start as the regular third baseman. Solarte entered play with five hits in his first 10 big league at-bats.

"We can mix it up," Girardi said. "I can put Anna there, too, if I feel like he needs the day or we like the matchup a little bit better, but he's playing great, so I'm going to leave him there."

• Closer David Robertson was unavailable on Saturday after pitching on Thursday and Friday, Girardi said. There is a "good chance" Shawn Kelley would be used in a save situation, Girardi added.

• On this date in 1995, the Yankees acquired right-hander John Wetteland from the Expos for first baseman Fernando Seguinol and cash considerations. Wetteland went on to be the named the MVP of the 1996 World Series, recording a save in each of the final four games of the Fall Classic against the Braves.
