BOSTON -- Red Sox manager John Farrell said before Wednesday's game against the White Sox that Brock Holt, Blake Swihart and Ryan Hanigan continue to progress from their injuries.
Holt, who has been on the disabled list since May 20 with a concussion, will continue his rehab assignment with Triple-A Pawtucket on Thursday. He'll play seven innings, shuffling between shortstop and third base, and then play the entire game in left field on Friday.
Holt went 2-for-3 with two doubles on Monday and 1-for-3 on Tuesday, playing left field in both games.
Swihart, who's been on the DL since June 5 with a severely sprained ankle, is in a weight-bearing walking boot. That's a notable improvement, as he was in a hard cast for the first two weeks following his injury.
"These are two guys that have competitive at-bats and baserunning ability. Brock made an impact when he was on the field," Farrell said. "Unfortunately, injuries takes guys away from you. We need guys to step up in their absence. That is a key for our team. Both guys are on the mend. Looking forward to getting both of them back."
Hanigan, who's been on the DL since June 5 with a strained neck, took batting practice and completed fielding drills before Wednesday's game. He'll begin a rehab assignment on Thursday, serving as designated hitter for Pawtucket, with the team specifically monitoring his neck and collarbone area.
"He was trying to manage the discomfort the best he could, but any time you can't perform to your abilities and you have to compete against your body, that compounds the frustration," Farrell said. "It got to a point where he had to take a breather."
