ST. PETERSBURG -- Brad Boxberger threw from a mound on Wednesday, and the results were encouraging.
"I did not actually see it," Rays manager Kevin Cash said. "But I know leading up to the bullpen, everybody was really thrilled with his progress and the way the ball was coming out of his hand playing catch."
Boxberger (adductor surgery), who led the American League in saves with 41 last season, said he threw a mixture of fastballs and curveballs during a 25-pitch bullpen session. He felt good afterward, and said he looked forward to having a mid-May return to the team.
The right-hander will throw another bullpen in a "couple of days." Shortly thereafter, he'll begin throwing live batting practice in advance of going on a rehab assignment.
In Boxberger's absence, Alex Colome has done a nice job serving as the team's closer. Cash said he is looking forward to having both at his disposal out of the bullpen.
Boxberger "will be very much welcome when he's ready to come back," Cash said.
