ST. PETERSBURG -- Michael Martinez will remain with the Rays, and Brad Miller is going on the 10-day disabled list.
The Rays announced the change in their course of action Wednesday.
Following Tuesday night's 4-2 loss to the White Sox at Tropicana Field, the Rays told reporters they were designating Martinez for assignment to make room on the roster for right-hander Jacob Faria, who is scheduled to start Wednesday night's game.
According to the Rays, that plan changed when they discovered Miller -- the team's starting second baseman -- had a hip strain. So Miller will be on the DL, while Martinez will remain with the team for now.
"Unique situation yesterday," Rays manager Kevin Cash said. "Obviously, we announced the Michael Martinez move. Fortunate for us, we didn't put it in, because Brad came in pretty late after the game and said that his hip was really bothering him.
"Talking to him this morning, we probably felt it was best to put him back on the disabled list. Let it cool down. We don't really have a time frame."
Cash noted that if Miller said he was hurting, he's going to take his claim seriously.
"Knowing Brad for the last two years, he hasn't spent hardly any time on the DL up until this last time," Cash said. "He's not one who's not capable of playing through some injuries, so this must be something that's grabbing him pretty good."
