Brandon Moss of the Oakland Athletics named the American League Player of the Week

Oakland Athletics first baseman Brandon Moss has been named the American League Player of the Week for the period ending June 17th. This is Brandon's first career weekly honor. The announcement was made earlier today on MLB Network.

Moss batted .348 (8-for-23) with three doubles, five homers, 10 RBI and seven runs scored in six games. Among Major League leaders, the 28-year-old finished tops in slugging percentage (1.130) and total bases (26), tied for first in homers and RBI, tied for second in runs scored and tied for third in doubles.

In an Interleague showdown with the Colorado Rockies on Tuesday, Moss posted his first career multi-homer game as the A's snapped a three-game losing streak with an 8-5 triumph at Coors Field. In the contest, Moss became the first player this season – and the 32nd overall – to reach the 13-year-old ballpark's third deck in right field with a towering blast as part of a six-run third inning to erase an early 4-0 lead by Colorado. Moss launched his second long ball of the game, a second-deck shot, in the fifth inning as he led Oakland's four-homer night, their most in a game since June 3, 2010 at Boston. In another slugfest between the two Clubs on Wednesday, Moss and teammates Jonny Gomes and Seth Smith each homered as the A's outlasted the Rockies, 10-8. A fourth-inning, two-run blast by Moss gave him homers on back-to-back nights for the first time in his six-year career. On Thursday, the Monroe, Georgia native went 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles and a homer as Oakland defeated Colorado, 8-2, for their first road sweep since September 2010. Moss collected four homers in the series, the most in a three-game set for Oakland since Geronimo Berroa accomplished the feat from August 12-14, 1996 against Minnesota. In the weekend series-opener with the San Diego Padres on Friday, the left-handed-hitting Moss homered again to help lead the A's past the Padres, 8-2, in Oakland. The eighth round pick in the 2002 First-Year Player Draft out of Loganville (GA) High School (by Boston) joined Jack Cust as the only Athletic hitters since the 2000 season to tally five homers over a four-day span. Additionally, he and Cust are the only pair in A's history to launch six homers in their first nine games with the Club. Both of Cust's feats came in 2007. In 11 games since his June 6th recall from Triple-A Sacramento, Moss has hit .278 (10-for-36) with six homers, 11 RBI and 10 runs scored, leading the A's to a 7-4 mark.

Other noteworthy performances last week included Minnesota Twins third baseman Trevor Plouffe (.391, 5 HR, 1.087 SLG); Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim starter Ervin Santana (one-hit shutout vs. the Arizona Diamondbacks on June 16th); and Baltimore Orioles starting pitcher Jason Hammel (one-hit shutout vs. the Atlanta Braves on June 16th).
