Phillips injures both hands in loss to Mets

NEW YORK -- Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips exited Sunday's game vs. the Mets in the seventh inning with multiple hand injuries.

During the fifth inning of a 7-2 loss, Phillips appeared to aggravate a sore left thumb that's bothered him this week on a swing against pitcher Steven Matz.

Phillips remained in the game, but later hurt his right hand, also. He was seen checking it throughout the sixth inning before he was replaced by Ivan De Jesus Jr. in the field for the bottom of the seventh.

"It was kind of a combination," Reds manager Bryan Price said. "He had a problem with the left hand on a swing. I think he was going to be able to play through that. But then on his right hand when he went back in to try and tag [Curtis] Granderson at second, he got his hand jammed on that play. Right now, both hands are probably on ice."

On Wednesday at Pittsburgh, Phillips was scratched from with a jammed left thumb -- an injury he sustained during Tuesday's game when he tagged Gregory Polanco as he attempted to steal second base.

The latest development came as the Reds endured a three-game sweep at the hands of the Mets, including two losses on Sunday. Phillips extended his hitting streak to six games when he led off the series finale with a home run off of Matz. It was originally ruled a single off the wall, but a crew chief review showed the ball cleared the fence and hit a railing above the orange line.

Phillips is batting .287 with five home runs and 30 RBIs.
