Hand injuries keep Phillips out of opener

CINCINNATI -- Banged up with injuries to both of his hands that forced him out of Sunday's game, Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips was missing from the starting lineup in Monday's 11-7 win over the Twins.

During Cincinnati's 7-2 loss to the Mets on Sunday, Phillips aggravated a jammed left thumb while swinging the bat and later hurt his right hand trying to apply a tag. Neither injury was expected to put him on the disabled list, according to Reds manager Bryan Price.

"He has had to handle the hand and wrist injuries, this is his third year of really getting banged up," Price said Monday afternoon. "He's still found a way to give us very competitive at-bats. I think he would have continued to compete if he had some tenderness with that left hand, but the issue with the right was really the one I think that got him out of the ballgame."

More Reds injury updates:

• Rookie starting pitcher Raisel Iglesias, on the 15-day DL since June 5 with a left oblique strain, will make his first rehab start for Triple-A Louisville on Tuesday. Iglesias is expected to throw around 40 pitches over two innings. The club would like him to build up to 90 pitches by his third start.

"That first one is always checking to make sure everything is OK," Price said. "I think he's fine. It's not an arm injury. It's an oblique. He hasn't had any recurring issues since he started throwing. He's been throwing for a while. Now more than anything, it's going to be building up the resiliency so he can start again."

• Reliever Tony Cingrani, on the DL since June 15 with a strained left shoulder, had his first bullpen session Monday. If there are no setbacks, Cingrani is slated to start a rehab assignment with Louisville on Saturday.

• Catcher Devin Mesoraco had successful surgery to repair a left hip impingement Monday morning in New York. Specialist Dr. Bryan Kelly performed the operation with Reds medical director Dr. Tim Kremchek part of the surgical team.

Price heard from Mesoraco after the procedure.

"Thumbs up, big thumbs up. I've been back and forth with the texts to him. He's very happy," Price said.
