ATLANTA -- The Braves walked off the Marlins, yet again, and this time their late rally dinged Miami's fading National League Wild Card hopes.
Kurt Suzuki delivered a two-out, RBI single off Brad Ziegler in the ninth inning, capping Atlanta's 6-5 walk-off victory, the club's seventh walk-off win of the season, and third against the Marlins, who have now lost 10 of 11.
"I was trying to get a ball up and out over the plate to put a good swing on it," Suzuki said. "I was not trying to do too much because that is when you can get yourself in a little hole."

Ozzie Albies, who committed an error to set up Miami's go-ahead run in the eighth inning, tied the game for Atlanta in the ninth with an RBI double. He is hitting .341 with 10 extra-base hits in his last 21 games.
• Talented Braves tandem emerging

The Braves win was aided by Sean Newcomb's gutsy performance. Newcomb allowed three runs in the first inning, but found a groove as he worked out of trouble in the remainder of his start. He went five innings and held the Marlins to seven hits on the night.
His curveball got him in trouble in the first, but he managed to use his fastball to put away a tough Marlins lineup. According to Statcast™, Newcomb had 12 swinging strikes with his four-seamer as it topped out at 97 mph.
"After that first inning, I wanted that to be it [in regards to the early runs]," Newcomb said. "That was my goal to hold them just to that. I wish I could've stuck it out there more in the sixth. But I was happy I was able to turn it around."

The Marlins have dropped five straight, and are falling further out of the National League Wild Card chase. With the Nationals beating the Phillies, 4-3, Washington's magic number to clinch the NL East is down to four games. That's any combination of Washington wins and Miami losses.
"It's frustrating, the time of year," Marlins manager don Mattingly said. "We haven't been playing very well, and we want to get going and maybe we can put a string together."
Matt Kemp's home run in a two-run fifth inning gave the Braves a 4-3 lead off Miami right-hander Dan Straily. But Miami tied it on Marcell Ozuna's RBI single. The run, charged to Sam Freeman, snaps a string of 13 2/3 innings of scoreless relief for the Braves lefty.

"It's definitely not for lack of effort, that's for sure," Straily said. "It's just not going our way right now. We've got to find a way to turn it around quickly, if we want to finish this thing out."
MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Fielding flub to flare: The Marlins carried a one-run lead into the ninth inning, courtesy of Ichiro Suzuki's two-out, RBI pinch-hit single. The hit was set up after Brian Anderson reached on second baseman Albies' error in the eighth. Leading off the eighth, Anderson's grounder when through Albies' legs. With two outs, Suzuki's flare to left was perfectly placed, and fell for a single that scored Anderson without a play.

Kemp connects: The Braves were able to chip back, tie and take the lead in the fifth inning on Albies' sacrifice fly and Kemp's two-out home run. Kemp's drive to left, according to Statcast™, traveled 394 feet with an exit velocity of 104.2 mph. Before Kemp's drive, Ender Inciarte tripled and scored the tying run. The Braves made Straily work. The right-hander threw 24 pitches in the fifth, and was lifted in the sixth with 98 pitches.
"It's always tough losing, especially one run," Straily said. "We played our butts off the whole night. We gave it all we got. We just got beat tonight."

ICHIRO INCHES CLOSER TO RECORD
Along with giving the Marlins the lead in the inning, Ichiro established an MLB record with 95 plate appearances as a pinch-hitter. Rusty Staub had 94 plate appearances as a pinch-hitter in 1983 with the Mets. Ichiro's 26 pinch-hits this year are tops in the Majors, and he's two away from the all-time mark; John Vander Wal had 28 pinch-hits in 1995 with the Rockies. More >

The Marlins jumped out to a three-run first inning, snapping a string of 40 innings (since the seventh inning on Sept. 2) of not scoring more than one run in a frame. Dee Gordon opened the inning with a triple. Christian Yelich had an RBI single. Ozuna tripled home a run, and Anderson picked up his first big league RBI. Anderson's single up the middle was clocked by Statcast™ at 110.6 mph.

WHAT'S NEXT
Marlins:Jose Urena (12-6, 3.71) gets the assignment for the second of four games at SunTrust Park. In the 7:35 p.m. ET start, Urena will face Atlanta for the fourth time this year. The right-hander is 1-1 with a 2.50 ERA in 18 innings against the Braves.
Braves:Mike Foltynewicz will take the mound when this four-game series resumes Friday at 7:35 p.m. ET. Foltynewicz recorded a career-high 11 strikeouts as he limited the Marlins to one run over 6 1/3 innings on Aug. 5.
