ATLANTA -- Matt Kemp and Brandon Phillips both made what the Braves described as precautionary exits because of ailments suffered during the eight-run fifth inning in Thursday night's 12-11 win over the Giants.

Kemp exited with tightness in the same left hamstring that caused him to miss a pair of starts last week. Phillips was removed because of the left groin tightness he experienced during the second of the two plate appearances he collected in the fifth.

The Braves' medical staff was encouraged by how both Kemp and Phillips responded to strength tests performed after they exited. As things stand, there's a chance both could be available for Friday's game against the Brewers.

"It was more precautionary than anything," Braves manager Brian Snitker said. "They felt a little grab. It's good. I'm glad they came to me and told me because they both tested out pretty good. They'll be day to day and we'll see where they are [Friday]."

Kemp exited immediately after delivering a single off Matt Cain. Because he was already feeling some discomfort, the Braves' left fielder went to the plate knowing Danny Santana would pinch-run for him if necessary.

"He's been through that," Snitker said. "He gets it and knows it and I'm glad because we can't afford to lose him for an extended period of time."

Kemp missed nearly two weeks in April with a right hamstring strain suffered April 7 in Pittsburgh. He was out of the lineup for two games this past weekend while recovering from the left hamstring discomfort he felt during a June 14 game against the Nationals.

Phillips homered to begin the fifth and then felt the groin discomfort when he swung at a cutter during his second plate appearance of the inning. He drew a walk and then ended up having to race from first to third when Nick Markakis followed with a single.

"It's just instincts," Phillips said. "I just ran. I think I'll be all right."
