Commissioner Robert D. Manfred, Jr. announced today that Atlanta Braves outfielder Hector Olivera has accepted a suspension without pay through August 1, 2016 for violating Major League Baseball's Joint Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Policy. The unpaid suspension of Olivera is retroactive to April 30, 2016 and covers 82 games. Olivera has agreed not to appeal the discipline. Olivera may participate in extended Spring Training activities during the remainder of the suspension, followed by a rehabilitation assignment beginning no sooner than July 15, 2016. Consistent with the terms of the Policy, Olivera will participate in a confidential and comprehensive evaluation and treatment program supervised by the Joint Policy Board.
Commissioner Manfred issued the following statement regarding the discipline:
"My office has completed its investigation into the allegation that Hector Olivera violated Major League Baseball's Joint Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Policy on April 13, 2016. Having reviewed all of the available evidence, I have concluded that Mr. Olivera violated the Policy and should be subject to discipline in the form of an unpaid suspension that will expire on August 1st. Mr. Olivera has also agreed to make a significant charitable contribution to one or more charitable organizations focused on preventing and treating survivors of domestic violence."
