Braves select RHP Mike Soroka with 28th overall pick in 2015 Draft
ATLANTA - The Atlanta Braves tonight selected right-handed pitcher Mike Soroka of Bishop Carroll High School in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, with their second selection (28th overall) in the 2015 First-Year Player Draft.
Soroka, a 6-foot-4, 200-pound right-hander, was a member of the 2015 Canadian Junior National team, where he made appearances this past spring against the Toronto Blue Jays, as well as the Braves extended spring training camp team and the Braves Dominican Summer League team. While playing for the Canadian team, he was coached by former Major Leaguer Chris Reitsma.
The 17-year-old was a 2015 Perfect Game Second-Team All-America selection, as well as a Canada/Puerto Rico All-Region Frist-Team selection. The Canadian native is committed to play baseball at the University of California at Berkley this fall.
The Braves have a Major League-high five selections within the first 75 picks during the opening night of the draft, including the 28th, 41st, 54th and 75th selections. The 40-round First-Year Player draft will continue Tuesday (June 9) at 1:00 p.m. ET with rounds three through 10 and will conclude Wednesday (June 10) at 12:00 p.m. ET with rounds 11 through 40. The Braves will select 14th in rounds three through 40.
