Braves top prospect Albies to miss rest of season

ATLANTA -- Braves top prospect Ozhaino Albies will miss the remainder of the season after suffering a minor right thumb fracture this week with Class A Rome, according to president of baseball operations John Hart. The plan at the moment is to shut Albies down and get him ready for the Instructional League.

Albies recently moved into the Braves' No. 1 prospect spot, according to MLB.com, with the departure of Jose Peraza in the July 30 trade that sent Alex Wood to the Dodgers and brought 30-year-old Cuban third baseman Hector Olivera to Atlanta.

Albies had a breakout season this year with Rome, displaying ability from both sides of the plate by hitting .310 with a .771 OPS. At 5-foot-9 and just 150 pounds, Albies is undersized, but he showed that he can hold his own with the bat as well as in the field at shortstop.

The 18-year-old infielder impressed enough to make an appearance at the Futures Game, where he started for the World team, batting second, and went 1-for-2. MLB.com rates Albies as the No. 37 overall prospect in the game.
