Brewer made strong impression with Gibson, Nagy

PHOENIX -- When he got the news that he was headed back to Triple-A Reno, right-hander Charles Brewer shook hands with manager Kirk Gibson and pitching coach Charles Nagy.

"He's very confident, you guys know that," Gibson said. "He's not pouting about it, he just knows it's part of his journey to be up here and have a huge impact on our success. He's got a great attitude about it."

The move was necessitated when Randall Delgado was called up to start Tuesday's game against the Marlins. Delgado didn't get a decision in the 3-2 walk-off win, but pitched seven strong innings with six strikeouts.

Brewer, a starter in the Minors, was brought up on June 9 to help bolster a depleted bullpen. He made two appearances and did not allow a run in 3 2/3 innings.

"We both agreed that his second outing was better than his first," Gibson said of he and Nagy. "He located the ball much better in the second outing, his breaking ball was much better in the second outing. He learned a lot, he observed a lot and he understands what he has to do to get guys out up here."

If nothing else, Brewer's stint in the big leagues helped position himself for a call up later this year should a need for pitching arise.

"He's smart enough to know that there's going to be other moves throughout the end of the season," Gibson said.
