PITTSBURGH -- Following Saturday night's 5-0 loss to the Pirates, the Brewers officially called up right-hander Zach Davies to start Sunday against the Pirates. The Brewers sent outfielder Keon Broxton to Triple-A Colorado Springs in a corresponding roster move.
It marked the first time Milwaukee needed a fifth starter this season, and Davies assumed the rotation spot that opened when Matt Garza (strained right lat) was placed on the 15-day disabled list at the end of Spring Training.
Davies began the season at Triple-A Colorado Springs, where he was 0-0 with a 2.00 ERA in two starts. Opponents batted just .176 (6-for-34, no home runs allowed). His last start was on Tuesday at Nashville. He tossed four innings, giving up two runs, one earned.
Davies, who is ranked as the Brewers' No. 19 prospect, made his Major League debut vs. Pittsburgh on Sept. 2 at Miller Park and received no decision in the Brewers' 9-4 win. He is 0-1 with an 11.25 ERA in two career starts against the Pirates.
Broxton struggled at the plate, going 0-for-16, and will get a chance to play on a regular basis at Triple-A.
