Vogt, 32, had been with the A's since 2013, earning All-Star honors in each of the previous two seasons. But he was scuffling at the plate this year, hitting just .217 with four home runs in 54 games, and the A's are in the process of getting younger.

With Vogt out of the mix, rookie Bruce Maxwell is eyeing an extended opportunity on the big league stage. Maxwell is 7-for-12 since his latest promotion.

Jane Lee has covered the A's for MLB.com since 2010.
