MILWAUKEE -- The Brewers on Thursday established the Nellie Global Award, which will be presented annually to a Wisconsin resident who works for good on a global scale.
The award is named for the late Brewers coach, broadcaster and front-office executive Davey Nelson, who served on the board of a home for children impacted by AIDS in South Africa before he died from cancer last year. It's the latest of a series of steps by the ballclub to honor Nelson's memory.
"Through this award we are able to keep Davey's vision alive by recognizing Wisconsin residents who share the same passion he did for making an impact around the world," said Brewers vice president of business operations Rick Schlesinger.
A nomination form is online at Brewers.com/NellieAward. Nominations must be received by the Brewers by June 2. Any U.S. resident can nominate a Wisconsin resident for the award, which will be presented on Nelson's birthday, June 20, before the Brewers play the Reds at Miller Park.
The Brewers will make a $2,500 donation to Open Arms Home for Children in South Africa in conjunction with the award, as well as a gift to local charity that provides care or services to orphaned children.
Arctic Tailgate, single-game sales set
Amid the Midwest's deep freeze came a sign of spring on Thursday. The Brewers announced they will begin selling tickets for 2019 home games on Saturday, Feb. 16, in conjunction with their annual Arctic Tailgate at Miller Park.
Single-game tickets will be available at 9 a.m. CT that day via Brewers.com as well as by telephone and in person at Miller Park, where the team will provide music and refreshments for fans and T-shirts for the first 250 who arrived at noon the previous day to camp overnight.
A very limited number of Opening Day tickets will be available at the event, with a four-ticket limit per fan. In recent years, the supply of Opening Day tickets has been exhausted quickly.
Fans planning to camp overnight should visit Brewers.com/ArcticTailgate for a list of regulations. Camping will only be permitted if the temperature is above 10 degrees.
Promotional schedule set
The club this week finalized its 2019 promotional schedule, including six theme nights, seven community nights and the addition of a Yasmani Grandal bobblehead giveaway on Aug. 25. Full details are at Brewers.com/promotions.
