Garza day to day with shoulder soreness

April 1st, 2016

HOUSTON -- Brewers starting pitcher Matt Garza exited in the fourth inning of Friday's 4-2 exhibition-game loss to the Astros with "right shoulder soreness," team officials said. Manager Craig Counsell said after the game that he doesn't expect Garza to miss his regular-season debut against the Giants on Wednesday.
"It's a shoulder strain, I don't think it's serious," Counsell said. "We'll keep evaluating."
Added Garza: "It just got suddenly tight and it was the last start before the season, so no need to push it. More precautionary than anything. I didn't feel comfortable."

Garza was putting together a solid final Spring Training start before the shoulder gave him trouble. He went 3 1/3 innings, allowing only a solo home run while striking out five and walking two batters.
Garza attributed the soreness to a "herky-jerky" effort against Arizona in his previous Spring Training start. He allowed nine hits and four runs over five innings in that game and felt his throwing motion was too erratic.
"Probably did things my body wasn't ready for in my last start and that might have contributed to it," he said. "To me, just felt like a muscle that hadn't been used enough and got tired."
Entering his 11th MLB season and third in Milwaukee, Garza is looking for a bounce-back campaign after his ERA ballooned to 5.63 in 2015. The right-hander has been fairly durable throughout his career, starting at least 24 games in seven of the past eight years.
