MILWAUKEE -- Brewers Minor Leaguer Julio Mendez, who suffered a cardiac event when he was hit by a pitch last week during an Arizona Rookie League game, remains in critical but stable condition in a Phoenix-area hospital, general manager David Stearns said in a brief update of the player's condition Friday.
"This continues to be a very serious situation and we send our thoughts and prayers to him," Stearns said. "Julio's family is by his side and asks for privacy at this time."
Mendez, 20, received treatment on the field in Tempe, Ariz., after he was hit in the chest by a pitch from Angels prospect Austin Krzeminski in the top of the ninth inning. The rest of the game was called off.

The Brewers signed Mendez out of Venezuela in 2014. He is a career .241 hitter, with 27 doubles and 58 RBIs in 182 games across four seasons in the Minor Leagues.
No deals
How active were the Brewers in the run-up to Thursday's waiver Trade Deadline?
"Active," Stearns said. "I think we saw that throughout the entire industry, that it was a pretty active Aug. 31. We were active in discussions up until the end. It probably calmed down for us about the time our game ended [Thursday] night [around 10 p.m. CT, an hour before the deadline].
"We weren't able to pull anything off, but when we look at the assortment of moves that we made, starting with Stephen Vogt through the Neil Walker pickup, we do think we were able to improve the team, supplement the core players we have. We're to September in meaningful baseball. That's where you want to be, and we'll let the games dictate how far we're going to go."

The Brewers' most likely targets were starting pitchers. Did they made a last-minute play for Justin Verlander before the Tigers traded him to Houston?
"I'll pass on that one," Stearns said.
Pina still sidelined
The Brewers received what qualified as a positive medical report Friday in catcher Manny Pina, who underwent further tests of a right hip flexor injury. Vogt started a third straight game with Pina on the bench.
"We're just on a day-to-day status," Brewers manager Craig Counsell said. "Stephen's been out there for a couple days now and he's holding up well and playing really well, so we're just trying to give Manny some time and get him as close to feeling 100 percent as we can."
Prospect Erceg gets promotion
After spending all season at advanced Class A Carolina, infielder Lucas Erceg was bumped up two levels Friday to Triple-A Colorado Springs to help the SkySox in the postseason. Erceg is No. 10 on MLBPipeline.com's list of the Top 30 Brewers prospects.
"He had a very nice last month in the Carolina League," said Stearns, referring to Erceg's .296/.384/.480 slash line in August. "He's still a guy who's going to have spent the majority of his year in [High Class A] ball, so there's a long way to go, but this should be a good experience for him."
