MILWAUKEE -- D-backs left-hander Robbie Ray may have set a career high with 11 strikeouts, but it was the Brewers who came away with a 6-4 win on Thursday afternoon as they took three out of four games in the series at Miller Park.
"Almost no-hit-type stuff today," D-backs manager Chip Hale said of Ray. "It was impressive, but again, it's about winning."
The D-backs staked Ray to a 2-0 lead in the first inning, thanks to Yasmany Tomás' two-run double, but the Brewers erased it with Hernán Pérez's two-run homer, which came with two outs in the third.
Milwaukee starter Zach Davies (8-4) settled in after the first inning while his offense helped secure him a win by putting together a three-run rally in the sixth that included an RBI single by Martín Maldonado and a two-run double by Keon Broxton.

"Giving up two-strike hits and putting the team in a hole in the first inning, that just can't happen," Davies said. "I was making sure I settled down a little bit and focused more. Once the first inning is over, you let it go."
MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
The Replacements: Without their top three hitters in terms of OPS -- Ryan Braun, Jonathan Lucroy and Jonathan Villar -- in the lineup, the Brewers received run-producing hits during the game-changing sixth from unlikely sources.

Maldonado, a .178 hitter entering play, lined a two-out single over the head of D-backs shortstop Jean Segura to score Perez and put Milwaukee up, 3-2. That marked the end of Ray's afternoon as Enrique Burgos came on in relief and promptly surrendered a two-run double to Broxton, who was batting .129 coming in.

"We're always going to come out and grind and do the best we can," Broxton said. "With the double, I was just looking for a good pitch, and he gave it to me. I put a good swing on it."
K's but no W: After striking out 10 Reds in his last start, Ray fanned 11 Brewers on Thursday, but in neither game did he or the D-backs get a win. Ray allowed five earned runs over his 5 2/3 innings of work Thursday, but two of the runs scored after he left the game in favor of Burgos.

"I felt great," Ray said. "I was pitching in and out with my fastball and getting ahead of guys and putting them away. My breaking stuff was really good too. I was really happy."
Cutting it close: The D-backs threatened against the Brewers' bullpen in the seventh and eighth, but they couldn't quite draw even. After a single and an error to lead off the seventh, Arizona had the tying run at the plate as Davies exited after 6 1/3 innings. Michael Bourn slapped an RBI single, but it was bookended by strikeouts against Will Smith to end the frame. Tyler Thornburg allowed a run on Rickie Weeks Jr.'s RBI single to make it a 5-4 game, but he stranded Weeks Jr. at second base as the potential tying run.

Given insurance by a Kirk Nieuwenhuis solo homer in the bottom half of the eighth, Jeremy Jeffress pitched in his first save situation since July 5 and got the job done with a perfect ninth.

Can't stop it: When Ray left the game with two outs and runners at first and second, the D-backs trailed, 3-2. But after Burgos gave up a two-run double to the first batter he faced, suddenly the deficit was more daunting.
"Our bullpen has got to be able to hold it there," Hale said. "That's a spot where they come in and Burgos has got to be able to get that guy out and get us in the dugout.
"We've got to find some guys out of our bullpen that are going to stop the bleeding and shut it down. It's imperative. And if we can't find them here, we're going to have to go elsewhere and give other guys a chance."

With his two-run double in the first, Tomas increased his RBI total in the series to eight, which was the most by a D-backs player since Paul Goldschmidt also drove in eight runs from June 3-6, 2013.
WHAT'S NEXT
D-backs:Zack Godley will start Friday night's game against the Dodgers in Los Angeles at 7:10 p.m. MST. Godley picked up the win in his last outing, beating the Reds on Sunday in Cincinnati. This will be his second appearance and first career start against the Dodgers.
Brewers: The Brewers continue their 10-game homestand by opening a three-game series with the Pirates on Friday at 7:10 p.m. CT. Junior Guerra is slated to start, looking to lower his 2.85 ERA and .206 batting average against.
