Brewers recall shortstop Jean Segura from Double-A Huntsville

Infielder Cesar Izturis Claimed off Waivers by Washington

MILWAUKEE – The Milwaukee Brewers today recalled shortstop Jean Segura from Double-A Huntsville.  He takes the 25-man roster spot of infielder Cesar Izturis, who was claimed off waivers by the Washington Nationals.  Segura will wear uniform number 9.  His first name is pronounced JEAN (like blue “jean”).

Segura, 22, was acquired by Milwaukee with right-handed pitchers Johnny Hellweg and Ariel Pena in the deal that sent Zack Greinke to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim on July 27.  He batted .433 (13-for-30) with 4 RBI and 4 stolen bases in 8 games with Huntsville.

Segura entered the season as the Angels’ second-best prospect according to Baseball America.  He began the year at Double-A Arkansas, where he batted .294 with 7 HR, 40 RBI and 33 stolen bases in 94 games before earning a promotion to the Angels on July 22.  Segura, who participated in the All-Star Futures Game in Kansas City and was a Texas League All-Star, made his Major League debut on July 24 vs. Kansas City, starting at shortstop.  It marked his only game with the Angels.

Izturis, 32, batted .235 with 2 HR and 11 RBI in 57 games with Milwaukee this season after making the team as a non-roster player.  He made 40 starts (39g at SS, 1g at 3b).  He was on the 15-day disabled list from May 26 to June 21 with a strained left hamstring.
