LOS ANGELES -- The Brewers are giving former first-round Draft pick Taylor Jungmann a break.
Jungmann, 0-4 with a 9.15 ERA in five Major League starts and 1-3 with a 9.87 ERA in eight starts at Triple-A Colorado Springs, was sent recently to the team's facility in Phoenix to regroup, general manager David Stearns said Sunday.
"We're giving him a mental break and allowing him to refresh," Stearns said. "Then, we'll get him going again."
The plan calls for Jungmann to remain at Maryvale Baseball Park for several weeks. It has yet to be determined, Stearns said, whether Jungmann will pitch in Arizona League games or just throw bullpen sessions.
Jungmann's sudden fall has been one of the biggest mysteries of the Brewers' season to date. He was one of their most promising young pitchers in 2015, going 9-8 with a 3.77 ERA in 21 starts and earning a spot in the Opening Day rotation for 2016.
But he struggled from the start. Jungmann, 26, surrendered 27 hits and 13 walks in 20 2/3 innings before the Brewers demoted him to the Minors, where he surrendered 39 hits and 35 walks in 31 innings with the Triple-A Sky Sox.
His most recent outing was June 10, when Jungmann needed 82 pitches for four innings.
