PHOENIX -- Travis Shaw started the Brewers' scoring with a booming home run, high off the batter's eye. Ryan Braun put them back in front with a pop-up that landed all of 10 feet from home plate.
Both methods of offensive production were effective enough in Milwaukee's 8-5 win over Arizona on Thursday at Maryvale Baseball Park, where Shaw and Jesus Aguilar of the Brewers and Daniel Descalso and David Peralta of the D-backs all went deep.
Descalso's two-run home run off Brewers starter Matt Garza in the third inning gave the D-backs a 4-2 lead. They led 5-3 before Milwaukee scored three runs in the fifth against reliever Tyler Jones to reclaim the advantage. Orlando Arcia and Lewis Brinson drove in a run apiece in the inning before Braun's pop-up in the sun eluded first baseman Descalso in front of home plate for an error, allowing the go-ahead run to score.

"You just want to see some pitches," said Braun, who finished 1-for-3 and is 2-for-9 in his first four Spring Training games. "I've had quite a few at-bats where I've gotten deeper in counts. I've seen some righties, some lefties. I've stayed on some pitches, others not so well. Results in Spring Training don't matter, it's just a matter of staying healthy and continuing to progress."
Shaw's long home run in the first was his third of the spring. It came against D-backs starter Robbie Ray, who struck out seven batters without a walk in four innings, while allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits.
"I felt good after that first inning with everything," Ray said. "My fastball command was doing pretty good for me. I was able to mix it in and out and blow some guys away upstairs, which is something I normally do. That was encouraging."

Garza surrendered four earned runs on five hits in 3 1/3 innings, while continuing his conversion to a more offspeed-heavy approach to pitching. He walked one batter and struck out none.
"I've just got to stick with the process," Garza said. "It's frustrating. Me and [pitching coach Derek Johnson] were talking between innings and, you know, I could have gone through that lineup with my heater. But then what does that do? What work do I get in? My spins are good, they're not consistent right now."
Garza threw four sequences of back-to-back changeups, something he said he never remembered doing in the regular season.
"I was thinking about how to compare it," Garza said. "For me, to a writer, it's trying to write with your left hand. You can't go full-go out of the gates because it's going to be a bunch of chicken scratch. You have to go slow. I know it's going to be frustrating at times."
D-backs up next:Archie Bradley continues his bid to win a spot in a crowded rotation when he takes the mound Friday afternoon at 1:05 p.m. MST in a split-squad game against the A's in Mesa. Shelby Miller, who has had a strong spring so far, will start the other split-squad matchup at Salt River Fields against the Mariners at 1:10 p.m. MST.
