The Brisbane Bandits' magical playoff run continued Saturday night, when they capturing their first Australian Baseball League championship with a dominant 7-1 victory over the Adelaide Bite in the second game of the ABL Championship Series.
After earning their first playoff berth in six years, the Bandits needed just two games in the best-of-three series to defeat the heavily favored Bite.
The Bandits were led by former big leaguer Travis Blackley, who allowed just one run in six innings, and Donald Lutz, who helped the Bandits to an early 3-0 lead with a three-run home run in the third inning. Lutz, the ABLCS MVP, did all of this on his 27th birthday.
The Bandits finished in first place in the regular season and went undefeated in the playoffs. The team got a 7-4 win in Game 1 of the Championship Series on Friday.
The win marks the team's first Claxton Shield in a decade, and its only championship since 1994.
Australia will now turn its attention to the World Baseball Classic qualifying round, which will take place at Blacktown International Sportspark in Sydney next Thursday to Sunday.
