Prospects Meadows, Newman move up

June 19th, 2016

CHICAGO -- Two of the Pirates' top prospects were on the move Saturday. Outfielder Austin Meadows was promoted to Triple-A Indianapolis, and shortstop Kevin Newman took his roster spot with Double-A Altoona.
Meadows, the Pirates' No. 2 prospect according to MLBPipeline.com, rode a 24-game hitting streak with Altoona to his promotion. Picked ninth overall in the 2013 Draft, Meadows batted .311/.365/.611 with six home runs, nine steals and 23 RBIs in 45 games for the Curve.
The 21-year-old joined Indianapolis on Saturday night, batting second and playing center field in his Triple-A debut, and brought his hitting streak with him. Meadows singled in his first at-bat and picked up another hit in the third inning.
Meadows, MLBPipeline.com's No. 16 overall prospect and the second-ranked outfielder, will have a hard time cracking Pittsburgh's Major League roster anytime soon. The Pirates' outfield trio of Andrew McCutchen, Starling Marte and Gregory Polanco is locked up long term. But in his fourth professional season, Meadows has put himself on the doorstep of the Majors.
Newman, 22, made an instant impact in his Double-A debut. Batting leadoff and playing shortstop, Newman lined an RBI single to right field in his third at-bat Saturday night.

Newman, the 19th overall pick in last year's Draft, hit .366/.428/.494 with 17 walks and 12 strikeouts in 41 games for Class A Advanced Bradenton before getting the callup. He led the Florida State League in average, on-base percentage and OPS (.922) while ranking second in slugging percentage.
Newman is the Pirates' No. 11 prospect, according to MLBPipeline.com.
Marte still sidelined
Marte was out of the starting lineup Saturday for the third straight game. Marte left Wednesday's game in New York after a one-hopper struck him in the face while he was diving for a ball in left field.
Matt Joyce started in left field in Marte's place. With Polanco off against lefty Jon Lester, Sean Rodriguez got the nod in right.
Familiar faces
The Pirates reunited with their 2015 National League Wild Card Game opponent, Jake Arrieta, on Friday at Wrigley Field. They'll be reunited with two other Wild Card Game foes next week on consecutive days, as Giants ace Madison Bumgarner (2014) is slated to start Monday at PNC Park and Johnny Cueto (2013) is expected to start Tuesday.
