Reid shows his stuff in short stint in bigs

CHICAGO -- It took a long time for right-hander Ryan Reid to get to the Major Leagues, and he ensured that his delayed presence was felt.

"He pitched multiple innings, what we were looking from him, and was very effective," manager Clint Hurdle said of Reid, who was optioned back to Triple-A Indianapolis on Sunday morning to clear roster space for A.J. Burnett, who came off the disabled list to start against the Cubs.

"It was great experience for [Reid], and his walkaway is that, I think, it will make him even better," Hurdle added. "He was looking for an opportunity for a fresh start, and he got it here. He was lost in the shuffle where he was."

Reid was a 2006 Draft choice by Tampa Bay, and he spent seven years in the Rays' Minor League system before signing with the Bucs last November as a Minor League free agent.

Reid spent a month with the Pirates following his early-June recall from Indianapolis, where he had posted an 0.52 ERA in 20 relief appearances. He appeared in seven games for the Bucs and posted a 1.64 ERA in 11 innings, allowing nine hits and two unintentional walks while striking out seven.

Burnett's return has bumped spot starter Jeanmar Gomez back to the bullpen which, even with Reid's departure, remains seven strong.
