GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- Giants ace Madison Bumgarner's 2016 spring debut began in similar fashion to his one in 2015. Bumgarner gave up a first-inning home run, but was otherwise smooth before the Reds were handed a 4-3 loss.
Eugenio Suarez opened the scoring for the Reds in the first when he slugged an 0-1 Bumgarner pitch to the bullpen in left-center field for a 1-0 lead. Bumgarner, who gave up a two-run homer in his debut last year, struck out the side in the second inning to wrap up his start vs. Cincinnati.

Reds starter Michael Lorenzen, who is vying for one of the three open rotation spots, pitched two perfect innings with two strikeouts as he dispatched San Francisco's hitters in brisk fashion.
"He was quick, they were swinging early, putting some fastballs in play early for some quick outs on the ground, which was good to see," Reds manager Bryan Price said. "More balls on the ground than in the air. Just really good stuff, a really good fastball-slider combination and he was very sharp."

Chris Heston followed Bumgarner with two scoreless innings and the Giants evened the game with a run in the third inning against Reds rotation candidate Tim Melville. Conor Gillaspie hit a leadoff double to right field and advanced to third base on Yorman Rodriguez's fielding error. Gillaspie came home on a Gorkys Hernandez groundout.
San Francisco added three runs in the sixth vs. Reds pitching prospect Amir Garrett. That included a two-run single to center field by Ehire Adrianza. The Reds scored twice in the eighth, on Hector Vargas' RBI triple and Tucker Barnhart's run-scoring single.

Giants up next: It'll be a busy Saturday for the Giants as they play their first of four scheduled split-squad games. Left-hander Ricky Romero, a 2011 All-Star who hasn't pitched in the Majors since 2013 due to knee injuries, will start against Texas at Scottsdale Stadium. Rookie right-hander Chris Stratton, San Francisco's No. 1 choice in the 2012 First-Year Player Draft, will confront Cleveland at Goodyear. Both games are at 12:05 PT.
Reds up next: For the first time this spring, the Reds will venture out of Goodyear on Saturday for a 3:05 p.m. ET game vs. the Cubs. Rotation candidate Brandon Finnegan will get his first start for Cincinnati. Finnegan allowed one hit in one scoreless inning of relief Tuesday. Joey Votto, Jay Bruce and Brandon Phillips will be making the trip and facing starter Trevor Cahill.
