Buster Posey of the San Francisco Giants named National League Player of the Week

San Francisco Giants catcher Buster Posey has been named National League Player of the Week for the period ending June 30th. The announcement was made earlier today on MLB Network.

In six games last week, Posey was tied for the Major League lead and led the National League with a .500 (11-for-22) batting average. The All-Star backstop's 1.182 slugging percentage and .560 on-base percentage were also the top marks in the Senior Circuit, while his four homers and 26 total bases were both tied for first. Posey had the third-most hits among all N.L. batters, while his six RBI ranked sixth. The 26-year-old also clubbed three doubles and had four runs scored.

Posey, who was hitting .307 prior to last week, finished the month with a .322 mark, which was the fifth-highest batting average among qualifying N.L. hitters. On Tuesday, the Georgia native's fourth-inning solo homer helped the Giants stay within striking distance of the Los Angeles Dodgers in an eventual 6-5 loss at Dodger Stadium. In Wednesday's matchup between the N.L. West rivals, Posey went 3-for-4 with a home run and a pair of RBI in a losing effort as the Giants fell, 4-2. He repeated his 3-for-4 performance in Friday's series-opener at Colorado, clubbing his second homer in as many days in a 4-1 loss at Coors Field. On Saturday, Posey's sixth-inning double plated Giants second baseman Marco Scutaro to tie the score at one before Rockies third baseman Nolan Arenado lifted Colorado to a 2-1 victory with a ninth-inning walk-off single. The 2012 N.L. MVP was 2-for-4 on the day to notch his 23rd multi-hit effort of the season, the second-most among N.L. backstops this year. In Sunday's series finale, the 2010 N.L. Rookie of the Year put the Giants up early with a solo shot in the third inning en-route to a 5-2 victory. The blast was Posey's 12th of the season and gave him his 48th RBI of the year, which is tops among N.L. catchers. This is his second career weekly award, having won previously for the week of July 4-11, 2010.

Other noteworthy performances last week included Colorado's Michael Cuddyer (.385, 10 H, 3 HR, 5 RBI, .731 SLG, 27-game hitting streak entering play today) and Wilin Rosario (.474, 9 H, 2 HR, 4 RBI, .947 SLG, .500 OBP); Atlanta's FreddieFreeman (.353, 2 HR, 5 RBI, .765 SLG) and Jason Heyward (.409, 9 H, 4 2B, HR, 4 RBI, .480 OBP); Yasiel Puig (.464, 13 H, 2 2B, 4 RBI, .714 SLG), Hanley Ramirez (.455, 2 HR, 8 RBI, 5 R, .500 OBP) and Stephen Fife (2-0, 1.98 ERA, 8 SO, 13.2 IP) of the Los Angeles Dodgers; and Philadelphia's Chase Utley (.400, 12 H, 11 R, 5 HR, 5 RBI, .867 SLG, .471 OBP) and Delmon Young (.478, 11 H, 2 2B, HR, 8 RBI, .520 OBP).
